Krabi to Koh Lanta: Why the Ferry Disappears Off Season

The Krabi to Koh Lanta passenger ferry is seasonal. Out of season the route is a minivan and a vehicle crossing — a different journey to time.

If you have booked Koh Lanta and cannot find a ferry, nothing is broken: the passenger boat from Krabi is a high-season service, and outside roughly November to April it simply does not run. The route still exists — it becomes a minivan down the coast plus a short vehicle crossing — but it is a different journey, with different timings, and it will not appear on the ferry timetable you were looking at. This post is about what actually replaces the boat and how to time it.

Why the timetable is empty

Thailand’s Andaman ferry network contracts hard in the wet season. The southwest monsoon runs roughly May to October on this coast, and the passenger routes that exist mainly to move tourists — Krabi to Lanta, Lanta to Phi Phi, the small-island day boats — are withdrawn rather than run at a loss into rough water and thin demand. Operators publish the season’s schedule when they are confident of it, which is why searching in July for a December sailing sometimes also returns nothing. Absence of a timetable is not the same as absence of a route.

What replaces it

The year-round answer is road. A minivan leaves from Krabi town, Krabi airport or Ao Nang, drives south down the coast, and reaches the pier area at Hua Hin — the mainland jetty, not the beach resort town of the same name far to the north. From there the vehicle crosses to Koh Lanta Noi, and the two Lanta islands are joined by a road bridge, so the rest is a drive on to Koh Lanta Yai and your beach. The whole thing is sold as one ticket and one seat; you stay with the van.

The bridge question

The mainland link at Hua Hin pier has historically been a short vehicle ferry, and a bridge to replace it has been in progress for years with its opening repeatedly rescheduled. Whether you cross by bridge or by barge on your travel date changes the timing by a modest amount and nothing else, but it is worth checking the current position rather than assuming either — the answer moves, and travel articles go stale on exactly this detail.

Timing it against a flight

This is where the seasonal switch actually bites. The ferry drops you at a pier and you then need onward transport; the minivan usually drops you at your accommodation, which sounds better and often is. But the van collects several parties in sequence, so the door-to-door time depends on where you sit in the pickup order and how many hotels are on the run. Build in real slack on the day you fly out of Krabi, and treat the last van of the afternoon as the last one, not as one of several.

Coming from Phi Phi or Phuket instead

Koh Lanta connects to Koh Phi Phi and on to Phuket by ferry in high season, and that chain is one of the nicest ways to arrive. In low season those links go the same way as the Krabi boat, and the practical route becomes Phuket to Krabi by bus or car and then south by road. If you are planning an island run across the wet months, our rainy season guide explains why the Andaman coast is the wrong side of the country in exactly those months, and whether swapping to the Gulf is the better trade.

The last-crossing problem

Vehicle crossings do not run all night, and in low season the useful window for getting onto the island closes in the late afternoon or early evening depending on the operator and the season. A delayed international flight into Krabi in the evening can leave you unable to reach Lanta that day at all. If your arrival is late, plan a night in Krabi town or Ao Nang and travel in the morning — it costs one night and removes the worst version of this journey.

Booking it without the panic

You do not need to arrange this weeks ahead. Guesthouses, the airport transfer desks and travel shops in Krabi all sell the same seats, usually for the next morning, and the price differences are small. What is worth doing in advance is confirming with your Koh Lanta hotel which beach you are on and telling the operator, because “Koh Lanta” is a long island and the drop-off order depends on it. Having a working phone to send that message the night before is the whole difference between a smooth pickup and standing in a car park.

Staying reachable through the transfer

A road-and-ferry day with several handovers is a day you want data throughout — the driver may call, the pickup time may move, and the hotel may need to hear that you are two hours late. Coverage down the Krabi coast and on Lanta is generally good, with the usual thinning on the crossings and quieter bays described in our island hopping guide. You do not need a Thai number for any of this, only data — we cover that distinction in do tourists need a Thai phone number — and you can compare data amounts on the pricing page before you leave home.
