Songkran 2027 Outside Chiang Mai: Pattaya's Wan Lai
Songkran does not end everywhere on 15 April 2027. Pattaya's Wan Lai runs later, Chonburi has its own days, and the islands keep their own rhythm.

If you will be in Thailand in April 2027 but not in Chiang Mai, the useful thing to know is that Songkran does not finish on the same day everywhere. The national holiday is 13 to 15 April, and in most of the country that is the water fight. Pattaya then holds its own Wan Lai afterwards, other districts of Chonburi run theirs on separate days across the second half of April, and the islands do something quieter on the national dates. Where you are decides what you get.
The national dates
Songkran is Thai New Year and the public holiday is 13, 14 and 15 April, which in 2027 is a Tuesday to Thursday. The government sometimes attaches extra days to make a longer break, and that announcement comes months rather than years ahead — so treat the three core dates as fixed and anything beyond them as unconfirmed until the official calendar is published. Songkran was inscribed on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list in December 2023, which has made the larger city celebrations noticeably bigger since.
Pattaya’s Wan Lai
Pattaya is the well-known exception. Wan Lai — roughly “flowing day” — is celebrated after the national holiday rather than during it, traditionally on 18 and 19 April, with the main day centred on Beach Road and Soi Songkran in the old town. It is a full closure of the seafront: sound systems, water tankers, and a crowd density that is closer to a street festival than to a family water fight. Confirm the exact 2027 dates against Pattaya City’s own announcement or the Tourism Authority of Thailand, because the schedule is set locally each year.
The rest of Chonburi
Wan Lai is a provincial tradition rather than a Pattaya one, and neighbouring towns hold theirs on their own days through the second half of April. Naklua, Bang Saen and Si Racha each have a version, and they are smaller, more local and considerably more about the sand pagodas and the temple procession than about the water. If the Pattaya crowd sounds like too much, one of these on a different day is the better afternoon.
| Where | Roughly when in April 2027 | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Most of the country | 13–15, the national holiday | Street water fights, family temple visits |
| Pattaya (Beach Road) | Traditionally 18–19, confirm locally | Large, loud, seafront closed |
| Naklua, Bang Saen, Si Racha | Separate days, second half of the month | Local, processions and sand pagodas |
| Gulf and Andaman islands | Mainly the national dates | Shorter, concentrated in the main strips |
The islands
Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan mark the national dates and then get on with the season. Patong and Chaweng have real water fights along the main beach roads, usually condensed into an afternoon rather than spread over days. Smaller islands may do almost nothing visible. If you are on a boat schedule that week, note that ferries and transfers run on holiday timetables and that piers are busy — the practicalities are the same ones covered in our island hopping guide.
What happens to your phone
Everything gets wet, including things you were sure would not. Water is thrown by the bucket from the backs of pickups, from hoses, and from high-pressure water guns at close range, and nobody checks what you are holding first. A sealed pouch on a lanyard is the standard answer and is sold on every corner in the days beforehand. Assume your phone will be soaked at some point on Beach Road and act accordingly: nothing valuable in an open pocket, nothing that cannot survive immersion.
Getting around during it
Roads through the celebration areas close or crawl, and the water fight itself makes riding a motorbike genuinely hazardous — a bucket to the face at speed is how a lot of the week’s injuries happen. Thailand runs a national road-safety campaign over the holiday for exactly this reason. Walk, or go by car, and give any transfer to an airport several hours more than the map suggests. Do not combine drinking with riding anything.
Doing it respectfully
Under the water fight there is a New Year with its own manners. Water poured gently over the hands of elders is a blessing, not an ambush; monks, older people and anyone plainly not participating are not targets. Powder and paste smeared on faces has become contentious and is best not initiated with strangers. None of this makes the day less fun — it is the difference between joining something and standing in the middle of it taking photographs.
Confirming the dates before you book
Only the 13–15 April national holiday is fixed. Pattaya’s Wan Lai dates, the Chonburi district days and any extra public holidays are announced closer to the time by city authorities and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and they do shift. Book accommodation early if you are targeting Pattaya for Wan Lai — the town fills, and it fills again for the later district days. If you are planning around Thailand’s other big movable festival, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is set by a lunar calendar and moves further each year than Songkran ever does.
Being reachable in a crowd
Beach Road on Wan Lai is the hardest place in Thailand to find a friend who has wandered off, and networks in a dense festival crowd slow down for everyone. Agree a meeting point and a time in advance rather than relying on live location. You do not need a Thai number to do any of this, only working data — the distinction is set out in do tourists need a Thai phone number — and having a plan already active before you arrive means no queue at a counter in the busiest week of the Thai year. Data amounts are on the pricing page.
